Identify Announces Integration of AppSight with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System

AppSight automates application problem resolution – accelerating one of the most time-consuming and costly processes of application lifecycle management by up to 70 percent

NEW YORK, June 7, 2005 – Identify Software, a Microsoft Premier Visual Studio Industry Partner, today announced beta availability of the integration of AppSight™, its innovative Application Problem Resolution System, with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System. With Visual Studio 2005 Team System, Microsoft intends to deliver highly productive, tightly integrated, and extensible lifecycle tools that facilitate communication among members of the development team and reduce the complexity of the application development lifecycle. AppSight enhances Visual Studio Team System by automating and accelerating the tasks of application problem resolution – one of the most time-consuming and costly processes of lifecycle application management.

For most enterprises and software vendors, problem resolution remains a manual, error-prone, communications-intensive activity that involves multiple members of the application development team – architects, developers, testers, and operations. The problem resolution team typically goes through a lengthy and costly process that includes iterative attempts to gather information about the problem and multiple attempts to recreate the problem before even beginning the root cause analysis phase. AppSight automates the entire process. By capturing actual problem history in a centralized repository using patented AppSight Black Box technology, AppSight provides the basis for team collaboration and communication. By providing role-specific analysis perspectives for each member of the team, AppSight streamlines the problem triage process. AppSight has been proven to accelerate the end-to-end problem resolution process by up to 70 percent.

"Today's multi-tier applications have many moving parts, and this makes problem resolution challenging and time-consuming," said Melissa Webster, research director at IDC. "Reducing the time and effort required to reproduce, triage, and identify the root cause of a problem helps avoid major delays and budget over-runs in application delivery, and reduces the risk of significant revenue and productivity losses for applications in production."

AppSight is integrated with Visual Studio 2005 Team System, through the addition of embedded user interfaces for all members of the application lifecycle, including architects, developers, and testers. While testers execute manual and automated tests through Visual Studio Team Test, AppSight’s problem resolution system leverages Black Box technology to transparently capture a complete execution record. AppSight's Black Box software monitors application execution and captures a synchronized, real time log of user actions, system events, performance metrics and code level trace across all tiers of a distributed application, much like the "black box" flight recorder on an aircraft captures a real time record of a flight. This saves the tester the time-consuming tasks of problem replication and documentation. The AppSight Black Box log files, linked to Work Items, are automatically saved in the Team Foundation Server. Developers analyze the logs to determine the root cause of any application problem – hangs, crashes, incorrect logic, slowdowns, interoperability issues, misconfiguration, and more. By providing a "common language" between testing and development teams, Identify's Black Box accelerates application testing and delivery, enhances software quality, and helps development teams deliver on time and within budget.

As a complete lifecycle solution, the AppSight problem resolution system extends into the next phase, as applications are deployed in production, providing automated problem capture capabilities with communication back to development teams. When a problem occurs, the AppSight Black Box sends an alert to the Microsoft MOM 2005 operator console and automatically stores full problem data, creating a Work Item, in Visual Studio Team Foundation Server. Developers then analyze the logs to determine the root cause of problems that occurred in the production environment. By transferring all required data from production into the hands of the development team, Identify minimizes fingerpointing and accelerates problem resolution cycles, enabling developers to focus on development rather than spend cycles on problem solving.

"Identify's AppSight directly delivers on the goals of Visual Studio 2005 Team System," said Prashant Sridharan, group product manager in the .NET Developer Product Management Group at Microsoft Corp. "By enabling collaboration on problem triage and resolution among all members of a software team -- architects, developers, testers, and operations managers -- AppSight can significantly reduce the complexity of the lifecycle management processes required to design, develop, deploy, and support applications."

"Over 600 customers are using AppSight to accelerate problem resolution processes across their applications' lifecycles," said Yochi Slonim, President and CEO, Identify Software. "Our seamless integration into Microsoft's Visual Studio 2005 Team System, makes it even easier for Microsoft customers to automate their problem resolution processes with the end result of streamlining their application development, testing, delivery, and support processes."
